So I didn't infact sign up with Paradise.net.nz. Why not? Well because of the lameness. I aborted on the whole slingshot deal, and made with the signing up to Paradise. Filled in forms and completed details as necessary. Got to the anticipated credit card details here section to discover said section was absent. We will need to mail or fax out the credit card (or other payment method) form to you they said. "The Hell?" I said. Lame! Why don't you just get them on this here website, with a little https action? Who knows. I grumbled, but decided that actually I had access to a fax, and didn't really care too much. Entered fax number and waited. That was on Thursday last week, around midday. 5pm rolled around and Nic fax guy informed me there was NO fax. Suck. The next day there was still no fax. So that evening I gave up on them (I really wanted the Internet. I needed it. I.. no, actually Sam really did, and I felt a bit bad for not having it sorted out for her. (only a bit mind)) So I looked at iHUG, and found them to be $8 a month more. Gave them the big finger and moved on to snap.co.nz. This was more like it. They were good, they were even based in chch, and they had a secure server. Nice.
Of course they suckered me in with there filthy secure server. Instead of getting the green light on hitting enter I got a "your account will need to be activated by a support dude, which will take up to 24 hours" BAH. Damnit, how hard is it to give it to me now now now? Slingshot who sucked could do it, surely people that suck less should be able to do it, and better.
But as I sent my credit card details into the abyss I figured I could just wait. Less than 24 hours later I got an email (not the promised phonecall) informing me that we were good to go.
Included in this email from my new ISP were all of my account details. This included my password and my credit card details. LAME. Now while I'm not actually paranoid about my credit card details wandering around without me I'm not too annoyed, I'm more annoyed at the lameness of having a secure server for me to give you the details, just so you can plain text email them back to me. Dumb asses. I emailed them to complain, but they have not deigned to reply.
So that was good. On Wednesday I got a letter from Paradise with my account details, and a credit card authorisation form. (Still no fax) I laughed at them. However I was annoyed to see that although I could send them the form back and it would take four days (upon arrival at their end) to activate my account, I could just call them, and they would activate it RIGHT AWAY.
Does this mean I could have done it on the phone the whole time? Apprently so. LAME LAME LAME LAME LAME LAME LAME
Note to The Warehouse: Although it is Mother's day this does not mean you should discount bras. No no no. I will not now, nor do I imagine I ever will wish to buy my mother a bra. And neither for your information does my sister. So why the hell do you think that putting them on sale for a special Mother's day treat is a good idea?
I think it is because you are an (anthropomophised) thicky.
Also, (and this goes for everyone, not just Red Shed readers) watching the BBC documentary "Living without memory" reminded me again of how precious and fragile the human mind is. Except Dave's which is a terrible thing to taste.
Note to Si: Don't go to Philly, there be no Coke there. Sucky.

Posted by luther at April 30, 2004 02:16 AM | TrackBackIhug is your friend. Instant hook up, and occasionally they send you a bill for $28, and you've got about 3 weeks to pay it, and you get unlimited hours access. And the people on the phone speak so very nicely. Paradise suck arse, cos they bill you in 28 day periods, not a month. Subtle difference, but enough to pants up your automatic payments.

My mind is fragile! I have that in writing.
Posted by: Dave on April 30, 2004 02:51 PMUm, dude. I could have hooked you up if you'd given me the word. I do work for telstraclear... It would/ could have been instant.
And as far as I am aware, it's not a 28day period. We bill usage monthly. But I could be wrong; I don't have the crazy genius of Claire.
Posted by: Emma on May 1, 2004 11:48 AMI love the inclusion of "crazy" there Em. Its only you I'm crazy for!
Oh, and Tim Tams.
Emma - Dang, you are right. I sort of forgot about that, but even if I had remembered, I'm not sure I would have thought you were in ISP related areas. Well I might be changing to them eventually anyway depending on how this SNAP thingo works out.
I concur, Claire is crazy.
Posted by: Luther on May 1, 2004 01:15 PMTimmy - I love it that you have The Warehouse, how do you say..'html'd?
The Red Shed indeed.
By the way, I have never bought a bra in my life. Must work on that..
Posted by: HAMISH (FORMERLY OF CHCH, NZ.) on May 2, 2004 02:29 PMSlingshot is bad. Very very very bad. Extremely bad. A friend in Wellington found a massive glaring security hole in ther system. He told them about it. They ignored him. He used said security hole and got a copy of the /etc/passwd file, and over a few days successfully broke out about 30,000 user passwords. He sent them to Slingshot. They ignored him. he then informed some media people that there was a glaring security hole, and that slignshot was wide open. They published a small article. Slingshot ignored it.
I believe said hole may still exist.
Do not trust them. Ever.
